  • Howl’s Moving Castle is the second most searched film in the most states with 14 states searching for it.
    • The original Japanese screenplay was written by Hayao Miyazaki and was adapted into English by award-winning author Neil Gaiman.
  • Spirited Away was the first anime and only foreign language film to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The film celebrated the 20th anniversary of its U.S. release in August 2022.
    • Despite the film’s critical acclaim, it was searched most in only one state: Hawaii.
  • Studio Ghibli’s founders, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, created and directed many films by the studio.
    • Isao Takahata directed one movie on our list: Grave of the Fireflies, the most searched movie in 18 states.
    • Hayao Miyazaki directed six films on our list. He is reportedly coming out of retirement to direct How Do You Live, Studio Ghibli’s next film, rumored to release in 2023.
  • People who don’t speak Japanese often watch Studio Ghibli movies “subbed” (subtitles) or “dubbed” (voiceover).
    • Many famous English speaking actors have recorded “dubbed” voiceovers for Ghibli films, including Cate Blanchett, Lauren Bacall, Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Liam Neeson, Kirsten Dunst, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Methodology

We used IMDb and SEMRush to compile every film from Studio Ghibli and the search volume for each movie. We narrowed the list to the top 15 Studio Ghibli films with the highest overall volume and used Google Trends to determine which films were googled most in each state.

The Most Searched Horror Movie Villains in Each State

Kick-off spooky season with GetWindstream’s study of the top searched horror movie villains.

It’s that time of year again! The leaves are changing, pumpkin spice is back, and all your favorite horror movie villains are making a return.

To celebrate the return of fall, we’re picking up where we left off with last year’s list of the most searched horror movie villains by state. Our 2022 list includes horror classics like American Psycho, Psycho, and Halloween and even features Jordan Peele’s 2021 version of Candyman

Horror fans’ Google search histories prove many people are drawn to what they fear. With this on our minds, the team at GetWindstream found each state’s most searched horror villain using our freaky fast Gig internet. Keep reading to see which villain led the reign of terror in your state.

See which horror villains residents of your state are googling

Interesting Findings

  • The American Psycho himself, Patrick Bateman, was the most searched villain, winning the top spot in 19 states.
  • Candyman was a villain that was nowhere near our list in 2021. However, given that Jordan Peele’s Candyman released last year and rated a whopping 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, we’re not surprised that this villain is showing up after saying his name a few times this year. In total, 12 states searched for the creepy slasher the most.
  • Maine and Utah were the only two states that searched for Pennywise the most. The cannibalistic clown is a resident of the fictional city Derry, Maine; however, IT was filmed in Canada.
  • Hellraiser’s Pinhead wasn’t the most searched villain in any states this year; perhaps Hulu’s Hellraiser reboot will change that.
  • While Psycho’s Norman Bates was the most searched villain in the US last year, only North Dakota was curious about the serial killer this year.

 Methodology

We compiled a list of the 20 most popular horror movie villains according to data gathered from Ranker and Screenrant. We then found each villain’s search volume in Semrush and plugged the 10 most-searched villains into Google Trends to see which was googled most by each state in the past 12 months.

Why Are People Leaving Netflix?

35% of Survey Respondents Have Left Netflix Due to a Decline in Content Quality

In the first three months of 2022, 200,000 subscribers left Netflix. For a streaming service that has dominated the entertainment industry for over a decade, this trend has the potential to be a major shift in the future of streaming. To determine why subscribers are leaving and where they are going, the team at GetWindstream surveyed 1,000 respondents about their streaming habits.

In order to understand why people would want to leave the streaming giant, we found out what draws Americans to a service in the first place. When it comes to what people watch most on streaming services, TV series and movies won out by 80%. As for what people look for in a streaming service, the majority of respondents (65%) wanted a good variety of old and new TV shows and new movie releases.

So, Why Are People Leaving Netflix?

Despite Netflix being a cultural mainstay for years, our survey found that certain changes have caused subscribers to consider other streaming platforms. Netflix’s plan to increase its current subscription price most likely had an effect, as did the possibility of commercials being added to the service.

Interesting Findings

  • 73% of respondents admitted to subscribing to streaming services just to watch a new season of a TV show, with 18% admitting to doing that most of the time.
  • Most people (64%) want to pay $6–$15 per month for streaming services. Only 9% of our respondents were okay paying more than $20.00 a month.
  • 20% said that they wouldn’t continue because sharing their accounts was important to them, while 6% said it just wouldn’t be worth it to continue if that was the case.
  • After leaving Netflix, 22% signed up for Amazon Prime, and 11% signed up for HBO Max.
  • 17% of respondents left Netflix because they felt like other streaming services were better and that they were just compromising in the end.

What About Those Who Continue to Subscribe to Netflix?

Although many people are leaving Netflix, our survey found that the streaming giant remains America’s #1 favorite streaming service. When given the option to select their favorite streaming service, 40% of respondents chose Netflix as their top pick.

For those respondents who are current subscribers of Netflix:

  • 68% pay for their own Netflix subscription
  • 63% still enjoy Netflix’s offerings.
  • 26% would end their subscription if Netflix banned password sharing.
  • 7% remain Netflix customers as they are the main provider of a shared Netflix account.

Overall, our survey found that price increases and waning content quality are the main reasons behind Netflix losing its subscribers. But in spite of that trend, our survey found that Netflix is still the most popular streaming service, with a selection of original content that can bring back some of the subscribers it has lost.
