Each State’s Most Searched Studio Ghibli Film

Grave of the Fireflies is the Most Searched Studio Ghibli Film in 18 States

Famous for its distinct art style, coming of age stories, and delicious looking food, Studio Ghibli holds a nostalgic place in many of our hearts. Whether it’s Spirited Away, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, or Grave of the Fireflies, many Americans have seen at least one of the studio’s iconic films.

With the world’s first Studio Ghibli theme park set to open November 1, the team at GetWindstream wanted to find the most searched Studio Ghibli movie in each state. And what better way to celebrate the opening than to stream one of their many beautiful films?

The Most Searched Studio Ghibli Film in Each State

Interesting Findings

  • Grave of the Fireflies is the most searched Studio Ghibli movie in the most U.S. states, with 18 states googling it most.
    • Studio Ghibli produced and released Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro at the same time (as a double feature) in 1988. Grave of the Fireflies is known for being a tragic war tale, while My Neighbor Totoro is a lighthearted children’s movie.
  • Howl’s Moving Castle is the second most searched film in the most states with 14 states searching for it.
    • The original Japanese screenplay was written by Hayao Miyazaki and was adapted into English by award-winning author Neil Gaiman.
  • Spirited Away was the first anime and only foreign language film to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The film celebrated the 20th anniversary of its U.S. release in August 2022.
    • Despite the film’s critical acclaim, it was searched most in only one state: Hawaii.
  • Studio Ghibli’s founders, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, created and directed many films by the studio.
    • Isao Takahata directed one movie on our list: Grave of the Fireflies, the most searched movie in 18 states.
    • Hayao Miyazaki directed six films on our list. He is reportedly coming out of retirement to direct How Do You Live, Studio Ghibli’s next film, rumored to release in 2023.
  • People who don’t speak Japanese often watch Studio Ghibli movies “subbed” (subtitles) or “dubbed” (voiceover).
    • Many famous English speaking actors have recorded “dubbed” voiceovers for Ghibli films, including Cate Blanchett, Lauren Bacall, Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Liam Neeson, Kirsten Dunst, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Methodology

We used IMDb and SEMRush to compile every film from Studio Ghibli and the search volume for each movie. We narrowed the list to the top 15 Studio Ghibli films with the highest overall volume and used Google Trends to determine which films were googled most in each state.

The Most Searched Horror Movie Villains in Each State

Kick-off spooky season with GetWindstream’s study of the top searched horror movie villains.

It’s that time of year again! The leaves are changing, pumpkin spice is back, and all your favorite horror movie villains are making a return.

To celebrate the return of fall, we’re picking up where we left off with last year’s list of the most searched horror movie villains by state. Our 2022 list includes horror classics like American Psycho, Psycho, and Halloween and even features Jordan Peele’s 2021 version of Candyman

Horror fans’ Google search histories prove many people are drawn to what they fear. With this on our minds, the team at GetWindstream found each state’s most searched horror villain using our freaky fast Gig internet. Keep reading to see which villain led the reign of terror in your state.

See which horror villains residents of your state are googling

Interesting Findings

  • The American Psycho himself, Patrick Bateman, was the most searched villain, winning the top spot in 19 states.
  • Candyman was a villain that was nowhere near our list in 2021. However, given that Jordan Peele’s Candyman released last year and rated a whopping 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, we’re not surprised that this villain is showing up after saying his name a few times this year. In total, 12 states searched for the creepy slasher the most.
  • Maine and Utah were the only two states that searched for Pennywise the most. The cannibalistic clown is a resident of the fictional city Derry, Maine; however, IT was filmed in Canada.
  • Hellraiser’s Pinhead wasn’t the most searched villain in any states this year; perhaps Hulu’s Hellraiser reboot will change that.
  • While Psycho’s Norman Bates was the most searched villain in the US last year, only North Dakota was curious about the serial killer this year.

 Methodology

We compiled a list of the 20 most popular horror movie villains according to data gathered from Ranker and Screenrant. We then found each villain’s search volume in Semrush and plugged the 10 most-searched villains into Google Trends to see which was googled most by each state in the past 12 months.

Every State’s Most Searched GIF

Want to know what GIF your state is searching for the most?

Whether you pronounce “GIF” with a hard or soft G, there’s no denying that the moving images have become a mainstay of internet culture. What better way to virtually share your emotions than to post a GIF of your favorite TV character acting them out for you?

Although GIFs have been popular online since the dawn of social media in the early 2000s, the first GIF was actually invented in 1987. That makes the GIF 35 years old this year!

To celebrate many more years of these iconic moving pictures, the team at GetWindstream wanted to find out each state’s most searched GIF.

Each State’s Most Googled GIF

Interesting Findings

  • “Funny GIF” is the most googled GIF in the highest number of states this year, with 12 states searching it most.
    • Giphy offers over 82,000 options classified as “funny GIF.”
  • “Yes GIF” occupies the second most googled in the most states spot with 10 states looking up the GIF most.
    • Giphy has almost 49,000 “yes” GIFs, with the most popular options including famous faces like Jack Nicholson, Jimmy Fallon, Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso, and Oprah Winfrey.
    • Last year, “yes GIF”  was only one state’s most searched GIF.
  • Last year’s most searched GIF in the most states was “happy birthday GIF,” with at least 16 searches per state.
  • Connecticut searched “The Office GIF” the most and this might be because the show made references to the state multiple times (you might recognize the episode title, “Dunder Mifflin, this is Connecticut”).
  • Ted Lasso GIF” was the most searched GIF in Illinois and Pennsylvania this year. Go Greyhounds!
  • Among Us, the popular video game that trended in 2020, was the most searched GIF in eight states in 2022.
  • The term “Baby Yoda GIF” was the most searched gif in 20 states from 2019-2021, making it the most searched GIF in our study.

Our Methodology

We used Google Trends-related queries to find the most searched GIFs across the United States over a span of five years. Based on those results, we then used the keyword research tool on Semrush to track and analyze the most relevant GIF searches across the country.

The most searched GIFs over the past 1, 2, and 5 years

In addition to finding the cumulative most searched GIF in each state over the past five years, we wanted to find out what was the most searched GIF in each state for 2022 alone. And then we figured—why not compare that to the most Googled GIFs from two and five years ago?

  • We found that Massachusettsans love to be on-trend. Five years ago, they searched for “dab GIF” the most. Right after The Mandalorian season one was released, they looked up “Baby Yoda GIF,” and then this past year? “dumpster fire” was the most searched GIF.
  • Montana, South Dakota, Vermont, Wyoming, and Maine are all about consistency: the most googled GIF from each of these states in every year we analyzed was “happy birthday.”
  • Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Michigan might need some self care. The most searched GIF from each of these states in the past year was “dumpster fire.”

Why Are People Leaving Netflix?

35% of Survey Respondents Have Left Netflix Due to a Decline in Content Quality

In the first three months of 2022, 200,000 subscribers left Netflix. For a streaming service that has dominated the entertainment industry for over a decade, this trend has the potential to be a major shift in the future of streaming. To determine why subscribers are leaving and where they are going, the team at GetWindstream surveyed 1,000 respondents about their streaming habits.

In order to understand why people would want to leave the streaming giant, we found out what draws Americans to a service in the first place. When it comes to what people watch most on streaming services, TV series and movies won out by 80%. As for what people look for in a streaming service, the majority of respondents (65%) wanted a good variety of old and new TV shows and new movie releases.

So, Why Are People Leaving Netflix?

Despite Netflix being a cultural mainstay for years, our survey found that certain changes have caused subscribers to consider other streaming platforms. Netflix’s plan to increase its current subscription price most likely had an effect, as did the possibility of commercials being added to the service.

Interesting Findings

  • 73% of respondents admitted to subscribing to streaming services just to watch a new season of a TV show, with 18% admitting to doing that most of the time.
  • Most people (64%) want to pay $6–$15 per month for streaming services. Only 9% of our respondents were okay paying more than $20.00 a month.
  • 20% said that they wouldn’t continue because sharing their accounts was important to them, while 6% said it just wouldn’t be worth it to continue if that was the case.
  • After leaving Netflix, 22% signed up for Amazon Prime, and 11% signed up for HBO Max.
  • 17% of respondents left Netflix because they felt like other streaming services were better and that they were just compromising in the end.

What About Those Who Continue to Subscribe to Netflix?

Although many people are leaving Netflix, our survey found that the streaming giant remains America’s #1 favorite streaming service. When given the option to select their favorite streaming service, 40% of respondents chose Netflix as their top pick.

For those respondents who are current subscribers of Netflix:

  • 68% pay for their own Netflix subscription
  • 63% still enjoy Netflix’s offerings.
  • 26% would end their subscription if Netflix banned password sharing.
  • 7% remain Netflix customers as they are the main provider of a shared Netflix account.

Overall, our survey found that price increases and waning content quality are the main reasons behind Netflix losing its subscribers. But in spite of that trend, our survey found that Netflix is still the most popular streaming service, with a selection of original content that can bring back some of the subscribers it has lost.

Your State’s Most Searched Classic Video Game Characters

From Mario to Sonic, You Searched All the Classics

For years, video games have taken people out of reality and into a virtual world that’s hard to escape. From the early days of the Atari to the most recent iterations of the Xbox and Playstation, video games have been in living rooms across the globe for decades and the industry shows no signs of slowing down. Handhelds like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck allow you to play high-quality video games on the go. The Xbox/Playstation wars are in full effect. Consoles like the Oculus and Valve Index are continuing to revolutionize virtual reality gaming as we know it. Whether playing locally or online with a fast internet connection, people can’t get enough of video games.

As incredible as the virtual environments are, it’s the classic video game characters that keep gamers coming back. You can’t have a castle without Bowser in it and Mario saving Princess Peach. There is no Emerald City without Sonic the Hedgehog and his sidekick Tails speeding through the fields. The team at GetWindstream wanted to know which classic video game characters you search for the most.

Map and Methodology

We’ve mapped out your favorite classic video game characters by state. We looked at characters from the 10 best selling home video games in the 1980s and the 1990s. Then we used Google Trends to determine search volume for the past year for each character by state. Check out your state’s favorite below.

Interesting Findings

  • Speeding to the Top – Sonic the Hedgehog has been around since the summer of ’91. Almost 30 years later, Sonic the Hedgehog the movie came out in 2020. And with the second installment of the film coming out in 2022, it’s no surprise that 21 states searched for the furry blue hedgehog the most in the past year. We’re sure we’ll need to add Tails and Knuckles to this list in the years to come.
  • Gotta Search Them All! – A combined 11 states searched for their favorite Pokémon. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle each topped different states accordingly, with Bulbasaur being the most popular amongst the three. Surprisingly, though, neither Pikachu nor Mewtwo made the cut.
  • The Winner is in Another Castle, Mario – The characters from the Super Mario universe were also searched most in 11 states. But surprisingly, the namesake of the classic video game, Mario, did not lead the charge. Instead, his nemesis, Bowser, stole the hearts—to go with the Princess—of the most states amongst the characters.
  • Unsung Classic Video Game Characters – A few characters were searched the most in only one state, so let’s highlight them for more to see! The Final Fantasy protagonist, Cloud Strife, was searched the most in Nevada. Louisiana looked for Street Fighter legend Ken Masters, while three states (California, Hawaii, New Jersey) searched for his rival Ryu the most. Princess Zelda, from the open-world classic Zelda games, was searched the most in only Utah, while Link, the sword and shield hero of the series, was searched the most in Alaska only.

America’s Most Searched Streaming Kids’ Show

Our data on Americas most searched kids show on streaming platforms reveals newer shows are more popular than older classics!

Screens are everywhere. From smartphones to smart tablets to your living room TV, we are surrounded by screens. Screens come with content, and there’s no content more saturated than children’s shows. Kids love watching other kids open toys, play video games, or learn science experiments on YouTube. But nothing compares to the endless stream of kids’ TV shows. With a good internet connection, parents can turn to streaming services like Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix to act as babysitters and teachers at the same time. At the end of the day, though, it’s all entertainment for the child.

We at GetWindstream wanted to know which kids TV show rules them all. Using Google Trends, we narrowed down 50 kids’ shows to the five most popular based on search volume. We found each state’s most searched kid show from these five family-friendly gems. While you won’t see some of the favorites we grew up watching (Blue’s Clues, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, or Magic School Bus), you’ll see some that you may want to watch with your kids, including Bluey and Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir.

Map of each states most searched for kids show on streaming platforms

Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir

It makes sense that a ladybug and a cat come together to save the world from the bad guys, right? That’s the premise of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, though initially it was geared towards young adults and teenagers. Over time, it shifted its concept and style for a much younger audience and now streams on both Netflix and Disney+. Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir had the most states that searched this show, with 44 out of 50 states searching the superhero series the most over the last 12 months.

Cocomelon

You’ve probably seen the TikTok video where the parent plays the intro music to Cocomelon, and the child comes barging into the room. That’s the effect Cocomelon has on children all across our nation. A simple 3D-animated nursery rhyme TV show that originated on YouTube, Cocomelon is one of the most recognizable kid shows on Netflix. While it didn’t top our list for the most searched kid show in the past 12 months, there may be a shift coming. Cocomelon has surpassed Miraculous Ladybug in the last three months in terms of search volume.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

One of our generation’s most beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, follows 12-year old Aang as he tries to end the war started by the Fire Nation. You can stream this beloved series on Netflix and Paramount+ with a subscription. Over the years, Avatar: The Last Airbender has had countless toys made, several books written, and a movie adaptation (that wasn’t so well received). And while we’ve deemed this as the third most popular kids show, it didn’t capture any top spots across the country. However, it did manage to garner 15 states’ attention for second-most searches.

Sesame Street

Big Bird and Elmo. Bert and Ernie. Cookie Monster and Grover. These recognizable names from the kid’s classic Sesame Street were not enough to top any state in search volume. Newer characters like Abby Cadabby and Julia couldn’t garner the same attention amongst younger viewers as they did since the 70s, even with its move to streaming service HBO Max. It doesn’t change the fact that Sesame Street is still beloved by young and old for sharing positive messages while helping kids learn their numbers and ABCs.

Bluey

Probably the most underrated show on our list, Bluey is an Australian show that follows a family of four dogs as they navigate family life and their emotions. A show made for preschoolers but enjoyed by parents alike, Bluey has two seasons under its belt, with the third season currently running. While incredibly popular in Australia, it has gained a substantial following in the states more recently with its inclusion in the Disney+ lineup. Unfortunately, search volume has not been there in the last 12 months for the animated series, placing last on our list in all except two states (we see you, West Virginia and Kentucky).

Each State’s Most Popular Horror Movie Villain: 2021 Report

Find out which horror movie villain haunts your Google searches in this new GetWindstream study.

For the past few decades, horror movie villains have been a part of our culture that drives nightmares, closet inspections, and sales of Halloween masks. How many of us get a cold chill at the mere thought of a man dressed in a mechanic’s jumpsuit lurking at the end of the alley? Or, if you’re like us, have never visited their attic thanks to Kayako, the antagonist in The Grudge

Horror fans’ Google search histories prove many people are drawn to what they fear. With this on our minds, the team at GetWindstream found each state’s most searched horror villain. Plus, using our freaky fast Gig internet, you can watch your favorite scary movies with even smoother streaming (possibly making the jump scares even spookier). Keep reading to see which villain led the reign of terror in your state.

Ten Years of Terror: Nationwide Results

Carrie740,500.00
Jack Torrance514,800.00
Samara48,100.00
Kayako (The Grudge)12,900.00

Like Norman Bates adding pearls to his mother’s ensemble, we want to be a little extra this year. Along with this year’s results, here are the nationwide findings for the past decade: the most popular horror villains from 2010 to 2021.

  • The title monster from Alien was the most searched villain nationwide over the past decade (and tops in four states). The xenomorph, as it’s come to be known, endures as audiences flocked to the two Alien prequels released in the 2010s, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
  • There’s no stopping this pint-sized terror when it comes to your TV screen. Amongst sequels and revamps, Chucky creator Don Mancini is now launching a TV series. Set to premiere in October of 2021, it may explain the Child’s Play craze in three states, landing the second spot for most searched in a decade.
  • From the comedic caricature in Hotel Transylvania to the iconic depiction in Young Frankenstein, Frankenstein’s monster boasts more than 70 films since his 1910 silver screen debut, and the interest shows no sign of slowing. Frankenstein had over two hundred thousand searches for the past decade alone, and was the most searched horror movie villain over that time period in four states.
  • Hannibal Lecter has no shortage of fans. Thanks to the popularity of this meat-eating murderer, his story has continued with such releases as Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Hannibal Rising. As a result, eight states looked for him most in their Google searches throughout the years.
  • The lore of Dracula goes back not just decades but centuries thanks to his real life counterpart Vlad the Impaler. With ongoing fascination with vampires, this cultural icon continues to take a bite out of search histories and has nationwide fans searching for him by the thousands.

Your State’s Most Popular Horror Movie Villain

Frightening Findings

  • Early drafts of The Ring set the story in Massachusetts, where the antagonist Samara was most searched this year.
  • Pennywise takes on Samara in a financial fight: The Ring was the highest-grossing horror remake in history at more than $249 million in the US until the 2017 version of It snatched the honor.
  • The exterior of the Overlook Hotel was filmed using Oregon’s Timberline Hotel Lodge at Mt. Hood, which may explain why Oregonians have Jack Torrance on their minds and search histories this past year.
  • West Virginians love a good scare. For the nationwide decade data, the Mountain State searched for eight out of the 18 villains. No other state came close to that amount.

Methodology

For the statewide data, GetWindstream compared 12 popular horror villains and their films by using Google Trends and looked at results for the past twelve months.

For the nationwide results, the team at GetWindstream searched Google Trends from June 2010 up until July 2021 for the highest search volume for a given horror movie character over a span of 11 years. In the event of a character tie, a keyword search volume tool was used to specify that character’s search volume for each state it was popular in.

America’s Longest-Running TV Shows—How Much Time Have You Invested?

How long does it take to watch your favorite show?

Shows like General Hospital, Saturday Night Live, and The Price is Right have spanned generations with loyal fans who still catch new episodes even though the shows premiered over 40 years ago. The beloved children’s show Arthur is about to turn 25 this year, meaning many kids who watched the show in the ‘90s are now able to tune into new plot lines with kids of their own.

Watching each episode of these and other long-running TV shows is no small feat (we’re looking at you, Days of Our Lives fans who have seen all 14,000+ episodes). With this in mind, the team at GetWindstream, an authorized reseller of Windstream, used an IMDB list of the 20 longest-running TV shows that are still on air and calculated the total amount of time that loyal fans dedicate to the top long-time programs.

Dig into the data

  • General Hospital first aired 58 years ago and has aired nearly 15,000 episodes. Since the original air date in 1963, we’ve seen cell phones go from a mere thought to a computer in our pockets.
  • By the time the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, nine of the currently-active shows were well established.
  • While Grey’s Anatomy is newer than Family Guy, Arthur, South Park, and SpongeBob SquarePants, the show has more than double the amount of airtime to date, clocking in at 15,621 minutes.
  • It’s said that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in a topic—by that standard, dedicated Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless, and General Hospital fans can all consider themselves soap opera masters.
  • The average American works 1,801 hours per year, which is fewer hours than Wheel of Fortune, The Bold and the Beautiful, Jeopardy, The Price is Right, The Young and the Restless, Days of Our Lives, and General Hospital have been on air.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants has the shortest total time to watch of all the series we examined, but you’ll still have to dedicate over a month consecutively to watch every episode.

Keeping Up With Each State’s Most Popular Kardashian

Keeping Up With Each State’s Most Popular Kardashian

With 20 seasons and over 200 episodes in the books, Keeping Up With the Kardashians is over. No more over-the-top verbal and physical battles between Kim and Kourtney. No more iconic pranks on Kris from Khloe and Scott. But while there will be no more new episodes of KUWTK, our love for them goes on. We follow them on social media, give them headline stories for businesses they start up, and eat up every gif, meme, and TikTok they share on the internet. We also search for them—a lot. Today, we continue to keep up with the Kardashians/Jenners through the internet, searching for each family member, trying to find the latest scoop on their lives.

GetWindstream used Google Trends data to determine the most popular Kardashian/Jenner in each state. While they each boast an impressive Instagram following (see below), it didn’t always line up with their search popularity. Let’s hope these findings will carry you over while you Kim-losing-her-diamond-earring-level ugly cry about KUWTK being over. Don’t worry—a mysterious Hulu Original is on it’s way from America’s favorite family to follow.

Kourtney Kardashian (124 million Instagram followers)

While she may be the “least exciting to look at,” according to Kim, 18 states found her the most exciting to search for—she was the top-searched Kardashian in the most states. Kim can’t complain about Kourtney not having a business of her own either, considering she started her own lifestyle and e-commerce website, Poosh, in 2019.

Khloe Kardashian (150 million Instagram followers)

No one’s cheating Khloe from being the most searched Kardashian in the second most states, with 13. Khloe had a dramatic run on KUWTK, from her quick engagement—and divorce—to Lamar Odom and the never-ending rollercoaster that is her relationship with Tristan Thompson.

Kris Jenner (41 million Instagram followers)

Kris Jenner, the head of the household and creator of the term “Momager,” was searched the most in nine different states. Rhode Islanders searched Kris the most amongst the states, potentially due to her visit to the state in 2019 for Jennifer Lawrence’s rehearsal dinner. Either way, Kris is more search-worthy than some of her children.

Kim Kardashian (225 million Instagram followers)

A few years ago, Kim Kardashian was more of a household name than any of her siblings, appearing on magazines, billboards, and everywhere in between. She was the face of KUWTK and continued to make headlines due to her success and relationships, most recently with Kanye West. Somehow, she only managed to be searched the most in eight states, one being California where the Kardashian family has long called home.

Kendall Jenner (167 million Instagram followers)

Minnesota, Utah, and Vermont were the only states that searched Kendall Jenner the most. While her looks and glam bring envy to the eyes of her beholders, her vulnerability on KUWTK made her an easy favorite, sharing her experience of anxiety during a time when mental health gained mainstream attention.

Kylie Jenner (237 million Instagram followers)

The most popular family member on social media, Kylie Jenner made it in the search bar for several states but was constantly outshined—or in this case, out-searched—by her sisters. She can still boast of her Instagram followers, becoming the youngest billionaire in the world, and the fact that she hid her pregnancy from all of us until baby Stormi was born! That’s an impressive feat when you have cameras and paparazzi following you everywhere.
